Narrative

Saratov Сара́тов is associated with the Volga Germans Wolgadeutsche Russlanddeutsche Поволжские немцы, who had been recruited as immigrants to Russia in the 18th century, when Catherine the Great published manifestos in 1762 and 1763, inviting Europeans, except Jews, to immigrate and farm Russian lands while maintaining their language and culture.
Until 1941, Pokrovsk, today Engels, across the Volga from Saratov, was the capital of the Volga German Republic АССР Немцев Поволжья.
