Narrative

By 1778, when Zhytomyr Житомир became part of Russia, it had a large Jewish community, and was a center of the Chasidic movement.
Zhytomyr Житомир held the same status as the official Jewish center of southern part of the Pale of Settlement as Vilnius held in the north.
From 1845 to 1862, printing of Hebrew books was permitted only in these two cities, and both were the seats of the two rabbinical schools which were established by the government in 1848, in line with the plans to force secular education on the Jews, based on in the Russian Haskalah movement.

On May 7–8, 1905. the Jewish community of Zhytomyr Житомир suffered a pogrom. and 20 were killed along with 10 young Jewish neighbors, who were killed when they came to defend,

On January 7–10, 1919. the Jewish community of Zhytomyr Житомир suffered a pogrom, and again on March 22, 1919, when 317 died.
