In 1939, camp d'Agde was established, on the road to Sète, to intern Spanish republican refugees in France, after the war Spanish Civewl War.

At the end of 1940, the Vichy regime turned camp d'Agde into an assembly center fro foreigners.
Approximately 6,000 foreigners were interned, including a thousand foreign Jews who had been rounded up in Hérault, in July, 1942.

Until February, 1941, Hermann Hartmeyer and his family were interned at camp d'Agde.
