In 1850, Rob Morris, a lawyer and educator from Boston, who had been an official with the Freemasons, founded the Order of the Eastern Star.
He set down the principles of the Order in his Rosary of the Eastern Star.

Members of the Order of the Eastern Star must be Master Masons, or women members must have specific relationships with Masons.
