Narrative
In 1683, Queens was established as one of the original 12 counties of New York, purpotedly named for the Queen consort, Catherine of Braganza, the Portuguese princess who married King Charles II of England in 1662.
Narrative
On May 4, 1897, the New York City Borough of Queens was authorized by a vote of the New York State Legislature after an 1894 referendum on consolidation.[
