Event Note

John Auerbach served as a soldier in the Polish army at the beginning of the Second World War.
During the German occupation, at age 16 years, he escaped from the Warszawa Ghetto, leaving behind his parents and a sister, who were killed soon after.
He obtained a Polish seaman's papers, and worked on German ships as a stoker for the duration of the War.
