Kurt Beckhardt was brought to a camp at Barham, near Claydon, where he and many other boys were housed, until the Battle of Britain began.
He was then sent to Wallingford Farm Training Colony, Oxfordshire, and then to Sheffield., where he lived in a hostel at 7 Priory Place that was hit during the Sheffield Blitz.
He was moved to the Great Synagogue on Wilson Road, and then to a hostel that was run by a Mr. Roberton, a and member of the Peace Pledge Union.
