Between 1922 and 1924, Lionel Crabb served as a cadet in HMS Conway, the Mercantile Marine Service Associations School ship, and then served in the Merchant Navy.

At the outbreak of World War II, Lionel Crabb joined the British Army as a Gunner.
He transferred to the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve RNVR where he was trained as a Bomb Safety Officer BSO.
On November 7, 1941, he was promoted to Temporary Lieutenant Special Branch.

Event Note

In 1944, after Italy surrendered to the allies, Lionel Crabb served as Commander of anti-sabotage diving in northern Italy, and head of the Clearance Diving Team in Venezia.

In August, 1945, Lionel Crabb was sent to Palestine to lead an underwater explosives disposal team removing mines placed by ITzL אצ"ל and Palyam פלי"ם‎.
