Event Note

In October, 1973, Benyamin Telem and his intelligence officer, Rami Luntz, prepared for war, contrary to the opinion of then-Chief of Staff, David Elazar, and then-director of Military Intelligence, Eli Zeira.
On Yom Kippur, October 6, 1973, Benyamin Telem sent five missile boats under the command of Captain Yomi Barkai to patrol the waters opposite the Syrian naval base at Latakiya.
Intelligence reported that Syrian missile boats were approaching the Tyre area, off the Lebanese coast, which would put them in range to fire missiles at Haifa.
The first sea battle in history between two missile-firing forces was about to begin, and none of the IDF's ground commanders was aware of it.
Benyamin Telem cites: "Ten at night. Eight hours after the start of the war. General Staff HQ announced that the commander of the navy was requested to come and present plans. At that time the missile boats were almost in Latakiya; HQ knew nothing about it."
He sent his deputy, who "suspected rightfully that the chief of staff was not all that much in the picture about the Navy" and extracted from the surprised Chief of Staff, David Elazar a half-hearted authorization to proceed with the battle.
The battle ended with a success restoring to the navy the honor it had lost in the Six-Day War.
