From 1921, Arthur Szyk lived and created his graphic art and book illustrations mainly in France and Poland.
In 1937 he moved to the United Kingdom.

Arthur Szyk gained real popularity through his war caricatures, in which, after the outbreak of World War II, he depicted the leaders of the Axis powers – mainly Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini and Emperor Hirohito.

During 1912-1914 the teenage Arthur Szyk produced numerous drawings and caricatures on contemporary political themes that were published in the Łódź satirical magazine Śmiech.

In 1913, Arthur Szyk returned to Poland, and studied in Teodor Axentowicz's class at Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków.

In 1914, Arthur Szyk and a group of Polish-Jewish artists and writers, travelled to Palestine, organized by the Jewish Cultural Society, haZamir, where he observed Jewish settlers working for the future Jewish state.

At the start of 1915, Arthur Szyk escaped from the Russian Army, and spent the rest of the war in Łódź. where he had drawn Russian soldiers, which were published as postcards/
