Event Note

On March 3, 1924, at his son Emir Abdullah's winter camp in Shunah, Sharif Hussein declared himself Caliph خلافة.
The Saudis, a rival clan that had no interest in the Caliphate خلافة, Sharif Hussein ousted and driven out of Arabia.
The British, who had supported Sharif Hussein during the Arab Revolt, and inspite of the promises written the Hussein-McMahon Correspondence, did not help Sharif Hussein against the Saudi attack, which took Mecca, Medina, and Jeddah.

Event Note

Sharif Hussein fled to Cyprus Kıbrıs, and then went to Amman عمّان, where his son, Abdullah bin al-Hussein, was king.
After Sharif Hussein's abdication, his son, Ali bin Al-hussein, assumed the throne, but he was forced to flee from Ibn Saud and his Salafist forces.

Sharif Hussein was buied in the mausoleum in Dhar al-Khatib, behind the eastern wall of the Haraam حَرَام‎.
Ilan Pappe cites: "Sharif Hussein, a sincere friend of the Palestinian movement, though he lacked power or political influence, died that summer. A vast throng surrounded the Dome of the Rock to pay homage to the man who at the end of his life sought in vain to claim Palestine for the Arabs. Towards the end of the mandate and immediately after, his son King Abdullah of Jordan, would use the tomb as a pretext for claiming Jerusalem."
