Event Note

In 1938, Pina Ginsburg and Moshe Auerbach established Mossad leAliyah Bet offices in Berlin, with approvel from the German government, to carry out clandestine Jewish immigration.
Idith Zertal cites: "Averbuch was two years younger than Yehieli, had immigrated to Palestine two years later, and was recruited to the Mossad several months after Yehieli's enlistment (in late 1938). The two worked together a great deal, especially prior to and early in the war.85 Like Yehieli, Averbuch was recruited for the clandestine immigration campaign from his kibbutz (Kefar Giladi), and for ten years, except for short visits, his family and friends almost never saw him. He served in Austria, faced Eichmann alone in Vienna as war loomed (after the Anschluss) in an effort to get Jews out of Europe, moved throughout the continent alone or with his partner Yehieli, dealt with ship owners, raised funds, maintained ties with the Jewish communities, fought with headquarters in Palestine, served in Istanbul, operated in Iran under a false name for about a year, and in the fall of 1944 was sent to Romania, from whereand from eastern Europe in generalhe directed the Mossad's largest operations."

Event Note

In 1941, on behalf of the Rescue Committee of the Jewish Agency, Zeev Shind, Teddy Kollek and Ehud Avriel were sent to Istanbul to make contact with Jewish communities under Nazi occupation and organize relief and rescue operations in Europe.
Zeev Shind, Moshe Agami and Ehud Avriel, Mossad leAliyah Bet agents in Istanbul, organized sailings from Romania.

Place Note

In March, 1940, Moshe Agami from Mossad leAliyah Bet, on his way from Genève to Palestine, visited the passengers stranded at Kladovo Кладово.

Boat May, 1940 דאריאן Sofia S Pole Star Darien

Place Note

In May, 1940, Shmarya Zameret, working in Greece with Moshe Agami, for Mossad leAliyah Bet, and travelling on a US passport, found Sofia S in Piraeus Πειραιάς, and acquired the boat for $40,000, with help from the Joint Distribution Committee.
He registered her in his name, as an American citizen, and changed her name to Darien, and then prepared her for taking passengers, adding bunks in the storage, and latrines at bow and stern.
When Italy entered the War, Eliyahu Golomb ordered a stop to the preparations, and the milritary leaders discussed selling Darien to the British, with the hope that sharing inyelligence would be advantageous, and hopefully ease the British blockage of Palestine.
The Jewish Agency agreed to turn her over to the British, but Mossad leAliyah Bet agents in Istanbul refused the orders.

Place Note

David Hacohen, Yehuda Arazi, Zeev Shind and Moshe Agami were sent to Cairo القاهرة‎, and sold the Darien דאריאן to the SOE, British intelligence, for 15,000 Sterling.
