Eclaireurs Israélites Jewish Scouts

Narrative

In 1923, the French Eclaireurs Israélites Jewish Scouts organization was founded by Robert Gamzon.

Narrative

In 1941 l'Eclaireurs Israélites integrated into the UGIF (Union générale des israélites de France) in order to undertake clandestine activity without arousing suspicion.
In November 1942, they went totally underground as La Sixième (the Sixth Bureau).

Narrative

La Sixieme, the illegal arm of the Eclaireurs Israélites, rescued children, particularly those in the camps established by the Vichy regime in the south of France, Gurs and Rivesaltes.
L'Eclaireurs Israélites established three children's homes in the south-west of France, in Moissac, at Beaulieu-sur-Durdogne, and at Saint-Cere. 200 children were sheltered in these homes, where they attended local schools, and received a Jewish education.
L'Eclaireurs Israélites also organized Hachshara, agricultural training as preparation for Aliyah to Palestine, on farms in the Moissac area.
