Sol Shalom Baskin served almost three years as a rifleman with the 34th 'Red Bull' Infantry Division of the United States Army,
He served in Tunisia and throughout the Italian Campaign, fighting at Casina, Anzio and in the Po Valley.

Sol Shalom Baskin came in contact with the Palestinian units of the British Army, in Italy, and soon became involved in their clandestine activities.
After the War, he took a short visit home, and returned to Europe, to help with Aliyah Bet.

Sol Shalom Baskin traveled around the world as a merchant seaman, and after a round-about trip, arrived in Palestine in the late April, 1948, where he joined the Haganah.

Sol Shalom Baskin served in the Alexandroni Brigade חטיבה 3 חטיבת אלכסנדרוני, first as platoon commander, then as company commander, and ending his service as Commanding Officer of the 37th Reconnaissance Battalion.
