Narrative

Dr. Susan Zuccotti told the story of nine Eastern European Jewish families displaced to France in 1943, and their flight through Vichy France and German-occupied Italy.
The experiences of many other survivors of the village and their journey over the Maritime Alps to Italy were also chronicled. Dr. Susan Zuccotti interviewed some elderly survivors and consulted archival evidence.
She provided background information on Jewish immigrants and political refugees in France from 1933 to 1939, and in Belgium and Luxembourg before the war.
The stories illustrated the resiliency and optimism of young people, and showed the capacity of women to take charge, make decisions, and lead their families to safety.
Dr. Susan Zuccotti combined a lucid narrative with meticulous historical accuracy.
